Advices and Queries readings.

History of Advices and Queries:

1656 Origins: The earliest advices began with a gathering of elders at Balby, who wrote a foundational list of guidance for Friends.

1791 Revisions: The Yearly Meeting adopted official general advices for monthly and quarterly meetings.

Oral to Written: Early queries were asked and answered orally in meetings, but this transitioned over time to written responses.

20th Century Shift: By the 20th century, written answers were dropped as requirements. The tone softened, "Advices" were paired alongside questions, and queries transformed into devotional and reflective tools rather than disciplinary checks.

1928 Updates: Revisions emphasized broader social and community responsibilities.

Today: Published as the first section of Quaker Faith & Practice, the modern pocket-sized red book contains 42 paragraphs used worldwide in private reflection and communal worship.

The Book of Discipline for Quakers in Britain, Quaker Faith & Practice, is undergoing a generational overhaul to transition into a new text titled Our Quaker Way: the spiritual discipline of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Britain. Quaker communities across the UK are scheduled to review the complete draft between November 2026 and July 2027 ahead of a planned meeting for discernment re adoption.
